Newcastle vs Aston Villa – Pre-game Assessment

This battle of two legendary clubs over the years, the Magpies and the Villans, will continue at St. James Park with fans looking to their team’s recent acquisitions to add more magic and luster.  Kieran Trippier for the hosts and Phillippe Coutinho for our Villans have proven to be match winners right out of the box.

Newcastle is matching our Brazilian with their own, Bruno Guimares, though the latter, as a defensive midfielder, is more likely to tackle our superstar than outscore him.

Both teams are in turn-around mode and all the pieces are not working in total synchronization.  Newcastle will benefit from a solid win against Everton and the remarkable industry of Saint-Maximin, while our Villans have a world-class goalkeeper in Martinez, international level players in every position and higher expectations.

Despite a sometimes brilliant, but ultimately frustrating draw against Leeds in the midweek, I expect Gerrard to right the ship with Watkins shining.

My prediction: Newcastle 2, Aston Villa 2

Likely Starting xi:

Newcastle (4, 3, 3): Dubravka, Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Manquillo, Shelvey, Guimares, Fraser, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wood

Aston Villa (4, 3, 3): Martinez, Cash, Chambers, Mings, Digne, Luiz, Ramsey, McGinn, Coutinho, Watkins, Buendía
