Aston Villa vs Brentford – Pre-game Assessment

Saturday, April 6, 15:00 – Villa Park

Referee: Michael Salisbury

The reverse fixture with Brentford in the middle of December was significant in a number of ways.  It was our first away victory in which we had come from behind, each team lost a player to a red card, Ben Mee for a dangerous tackle and our Boubacar Kamara for getting caught up in a melee in the waning minutes of the game in which he grabbed Yarmolyuk around the neck.

Coincidentally, both Mee and Kamara are both out with injury for the season.  In addition, Brentford are also without Joshua Dasilva, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, Ethan Pinnock, Christian Norgaard, and Kevin Schade.

In contrast, other than Kamara we are only missing Mings, Buendia, and Cash.  Having Martinez, McGinn, Watkins, Torres, Bailey, and Tielemans able to start will feel enormous.  Knowing Jacob Ramsey is out for the season is unfortunate, but better than being disappointed every week.

Brentford find themselves in a difficult spell having not won in eight games (five losses and three ties).  Of the four games that were away, they have lost all of them.  While they are in 15th place of the Premier League and still in the danger zone, they play three of the teams who are below them between now and the end of the season and should do well enough in those games to keep from being relegated.

Our Villans, in contrast, have dreams of getting into the UEFA Champions League with Spurs the only realistic threat to capture 4th spot.  Manchester United’s shocking loss in injury time to Chelsea all but dooms their chances of a late season surge.

With McGinn and Watkins fresh, our Villans should have no trouble winning against Brentford comfortably and giving us the double.  Watkins is definitely a likely scorer as is Luiz.

Prediction:  Aston Villa 3, Brentford 0

Predicted Villa Line-Up:

Aston Villa: (4, 4, 2) Martínez, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne, Bailey, Tielemans, Luiz, McGinn, Diaby, Watkins
