Season 2021/2022, A chance for Villa fans to smile

Since Steven Gerrard arrived as manager at Villa Park in November, we Villa fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster ride.  Two impressive wins were followed by brave performances against elite clubs, then more disappointing results than consistently good results.

Certainly, after the performance at Villa Park against Watford that was an embarrassing loss for the team and their manager, last week’s game against Brighton took on an outsize significance.

Fortunately for all Villans involved, the team came through with a very solid performance and one they can build upon.  A 2-0 victory on the road, keeping a clean sheet, and with a sense of knowing what they were trying to achieve is a repeatable formula that should work well against the very effective Saints team coming on Saturday.

It may not be as exciting as the game against Leeds when we scored three goals in 13 minutes, but a strategy built on solid defense will propel us up the table, get us into Europe and attract the talent that we need to enhance the squad.

Southampton will arrive at Villa Park on Saturday bursting with confidence from their recent impressive run including winning at Spurs and holding Manchester City and United to 1-1 ties in the Premier League.

Villa will match that with pride and a score to settle.  The score will be the 1-0 loss to the Saints, their 5th loss in a row, and the last game for likeable Dean Smith as manager back last November.

These are two teams that are currently on a par (their points and goals for and against are almost identical), but one is playing above their potential and one just reaching their potential.  With the proper focus, our Villans should be able to hold off the Saints and head in the right direction.
